A land-grant college established in 1866 in connection with Dartmouth University, UNH moved to Durham in 1893 to focus its curriculum on agriculture. This is no city college; Durham is surrounded by woods and about an hour’s drive from the nearest airports.
Getting here takes some planning… but once you’re here, we’ll take great care of you.
In an effort to keep costs down, and in response to your feedback, we have gone from a 4-day schedule to a 3-day schedule. In order to accommodate all our panelists, we will have THREE FULL DAYS— sessions will run from 10-5 on Thursday, 8:30-5 on Friday, and Saturday panels will run from 8:00-11:30 followed by workshops from 1-5.
BY AIRPLANE
UNH is served by two large airports and a smaller, regional airport. Boston Logan International Airport, 64 miles from campus, and Portland International Jetport in Maine, 59 miles from campus are the two large airports. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (locally referred to as Manchester Airport), in Manchester, New Hampshire is 36 miles from campus. Boston Logan International Airport is the only airport that has public transportation options to our area (and then you’ll need to take a short Uber ride.) Once in Durham, public transportation from campus to other towns is very limited; we recommend renting a car if you think you might venture off campus.
Logan International Airport, Boston, MA
New England’s busiest airport, Logan Airport has over 40 airlines and hundreds of flights per day. There are myriad ways to get to and from the airport. If you have some time and are flying into Boston, try to visit the city as it has many cultural attractions, the historic Freedom Trail, a great food scene, and is a very walkable city. https://www.massport.com/logan-airport/getting-to-logan
From Logan International Airport to Campus
Bus
There is no direct public transportation to UNH campus from Logan, but there is a very convenient bus that many students take that has stops in nearby Portsmouth, NH, and Dover, NH: C & J bus—a lovely scheduled charter bus that leaves every half hour. No matter your carrier, there is 1 pick up spot outside of baggage claim area. Look for the C & J signs and Seacoast NH. A one-way ticket to Portsmouth, NH or Dover, NH costs 27.00. From the Portsmouth (12.8 miles and about 20 minutes) and Dover (7.7 miles and about 15 minutes) locations, arrange for an Uber ride to get you to campus. Students use C & J all the time, and area Uber drivers are well acquainted with this request and readily answer the call for a ride. To purchase tickets in advance, see: https://www.ridecj.com/logan
Car Rental
Logan also has a large car rental service. The airport is north of the city, so while you won’t be driving in Boston proper, you may hit some congestion if you’re heading north to UNH during peak commute times.
The 64-mile drive will take, at a minimum, 1 hour and 15 min, and could take as much as 2 hours, as Boston and summer traffic heading north can be unpredictable. Make sure you drive on I-95 North (NOT I-93 as some direction apps try to steer you to). From the airport, take Route 1 N to Route I-95 N to Exit 4 in New Hampshire (a left exit) to merge onto NH 16/ Route 4 West towards the White Mountains. Take the Route 4 W exit (University of New Hampshire signs), Left off the exit towards Durham. Take Route 108 or Route 155A exits to get to the University of New Hampshire.
If you rent a car, you will need to visit our Parking and Accommodations Page to register for parking.
Train
While there is no direct train all the way to UNH, if you love train travel, it is possible to change trains in Boston and land directly on campus.
Amtrak Acela and Northeast Regional lines travel up the East Coast connecting Washington, D.C, NYC, and Boston. From Boston, it is possible to change trains to the Amtrak Downeaster and ride right into campus at our historic train station. From the train station, it is about .6 of a mile to the dorms the Conference is using, Hetzel Hall and Mills Hall, about a 13 min walk on paved sidewalks.
BUT…, like many routes in our very old and congested Northeast corridor, this connection takes some planning. If you are coming from south of Boston, trains arrive at South Station in Boston. You cannot go further north without leaving Boston’s South Station, taking a local subway, known as the “T,” or a local taxi to North Station and then finding the train platforms. All trains going north of Boston leave out of the North Station.
There is no direct train connection to/from Logan Airport. If you fly into Logan and want to take the Boston to Durham train, take transportation from the airport to North Station.
Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, Manchester, NH
Depending on where you are coming from and your preferred carriers, you may find cheaper flights to and from this airport opposed to Boston’s airport (see below). This is a relatively small airport for those who like less hustle and bustle.
There is no public transportation from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport to campus.
Manchester-Boston Regional Airport car rental services include most of the major car rental companies: https://www.flymanchester.com/ground-transportation/car-rentals/
If you rent a car, you will need to visit our Parking and Accomm
From Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, by car, take I-293 South/ NH 101 E to NH 101 E towards Portsmouth. Take Exit 7 on NH 101E to merge onto NH 125 N for 18 miles to NH 155A, which leads you into campus. Depending on the time of day, this drive will take you about 45-60 minutes.
Private car service can be reserved.
It is also recommended to use your Uber or Lyft app if you are not renting a car.
Portland International Jetport, Maine
Nearly equidistant from campus as our Boston Logan International Airport, Portland International Jetport may offer a less expensive alternative for your flight. Again, there is no public transportation to campus from the Portland International Jetport. You will have to arrange for a rental car if you choose this airport.
From Portland International Jetport, it’s about an hour drive to campus. Follow I-95 South to Exit 5 in N.H. (Spaulding Turnpike). Continue north on the Spaulding Turnpike over Little Bay Bridge to Exit 6. Use left lanes of exit ramp to turn left at signal onto US 4 West. Then, follow US 4 West approximately 6 miles to NH 155A exit. At bottom of exit ramp turn left onto NH 155A (Main Street)
Follow NH 155A (Main Street) past a short stretch of fields that house our dairy cows and horse stables to the UNH campus.
